Futons sold in the United States are required to comply with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's cigarette smoldering flammability standard, 16 Code of Federal Regulations 1632 (16 C.F.R.). This standard is equivalent to California Bureau of Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation Technical Bulletin No. 106 and measures the resistance of a finished bedding product to cigarette smoldering ignition.

Be advised that this is standard for finished products only; therefore, compliance of any individual construction component with Technical Bulletin No. 117 (or any other similar small-scaled flammability standard) cannot be used as proof that the finished futon complies with Technical Bulletin No. 106.
Why is this important?
Today's version of the futon usually has a frame, cover, and mattress that may contain cotton batting or polyurethane foam padding which are materials that may catch fire if touched by a cigarette, match, lighter, or other open flame! Safety is always an issue at Otis Bed and we take extra precautions to make sure our products meet or exceed the Home Bureau's safety standards in the industry.
